Rising Damp

Rising Damp is defined as the slow upward movement of water in the lower sections of walls and other ground-supported structures by capillary action. “Capillary Action” is the term used to describe water or liquid effectively being sucked upwards against gravity through a porous substance.
 
The majority of homes in Australia are built with brick and stone foundations. Both of these materials are porous, likewise with the mortar they are laid in. The moisture from the ground is usually stopped by a Damp Proof Course (DPC) set in the mortar at around the floor level.
 
Modern homes now use a more flexible and long lasting material for the DPC installed as they are built. However in the past the materials used were, Lead, Slate or Bitumen sheets. These overtime, break down and can crack in places with movement of the foundations or expansion and contraction.
 
When the DPC material is broken or bridged in a section of wall, the moisture rising through the foundation can continue above the DPC thus affecting the habitable sections of wall.

Method of repair

In the past the repair and fix for rising damp has been slow and laborious. Requiring small section of the brickwork to be removed and a new DPC installed in alternating and overlapping sections. With chemical development, a liquid has been created that can be injected under pressure to replace the old broken down section of Damp Proof Course.
